Designer nails for your wedding

Plan Your Wedding..
Brighten up your bridal look with well-designed finger nails this season. Whether you are thinking swarovski on your d-day or planning to deck up your nails for your beach honeymoon, choices galore. Here’s all that you wanted to know about nail art.
A few years ago who thought of decorating one’s nails as per the occasion, it would have sounded off-track, isn’t it? Today there’s no reason why one should be stuck with single shaded nails, especially when you are the bride. Yes, nail art has become a talk of the town these days. It seems one can express anything through one’s nails, from flowers to Swarovski, from glitters to tattoos — you can adorn anything on those pretty long nails that you have worked so hard to grow and strengthen in the past few months.

Bharati Taneja, director, Alps Cosmetic Clinics and Academy says “Like face, hands are the first glimpse of your appearance and impression while talking to a person. And attractive nails route everyone’s attention to your hands really fast. Beautiful and healthy nails if decorated in an artistic, unique and fashionable manner  leave that lasting impression. That is why I advise nail art as an important beautification statement for a bride.”
Nail art is not a part of your regular manicures, pedicures or even nail extension but a stand- alone service, which comes at a separate price range. It is not just limited to the brides-to-be but any woman with the attitude to carry it off can give it a try. You can have different reasons to get it done, you can be celebrating a wedding; the change in season or maybe you want to get it done just to cheer yourself up from the winter blues.
Here’s a snapshot on the most happening techniques around.

Free Style Nail Art or Brush Nail Art: It is the most popular and the most creative nail art technique these days. It is done with fabric colours and painting brush. Here, the artist will apply two coats of nail polish that is the base coat on each nail and then allow it to dry. After this s/he will create designs of your choice with fabric paints using a very thin painting brush. After drying, the design will be sealed with a top coat, which is the transparent nail paint. These designs can be as versatile as sun flowers to a bon fire in a winter night.
“Brush art can be used in as varied ways as possible, the artist can create many designs using this technique from flowers to cartoon characters all by his/her imagination” says Manmeet Kaur, owner, Zoe Nails.

Needle Nail ArtThis type of nail art is done with the use of a nail art needle. After the base coat has been applied successfully, drops of nail polish are applied on the dry nails as required; these drops are then converted into designs by using the nail art needle.

Stamping and Tattoo Nail Art: As the name suggests, a stamp is applied on the base coat, your beautician will have a set of readymade stamps which can be applied using the stamping tool. In tattoo nail art, a tattoo sticker is put on the base coat and sealed at the end.

Nail Decoration and Piercing: Nail art is not just about painting your nails; you can also decorate them with Swarovski and glitter. Here, after applying the design on your nails your therapist will stick things like Swarovski, glitter or dry flowers on them.
“Nail Art has become an obsession these days and the designs and trends change frequently but most popular is the permanent nail art. This technique can fix the Swarovski, studs, pearls etc into gel polish or clear gel. This will stay for a month without chipping, cracking or fading”, says Gurpreet Seble, international educator and nail expert from USA.
On the other hand, nail piercing is accessorising the nails with small jewellery articles, a nail drill is used manually to pierce the free edge of the nail so as to attach the jewelley, which includes sterling silver or 9ct gold nail studs, initials etc. It is most successful on artificial nails; however it is possible to pierce natural nails if they are strengthened with nail extension. This type of jewellery gives a pretty look when it dangles from the free edges of your nails.

French Nail Art: In this form of nail art a light pink, light beige or light peach base coat is used. After the coat is dried a coat of bright white is applied on the tip of the nail. This is then sealed with a top coat like in all other techniques.

Stripping and Marble Nail Art: In stripping, different nail art brushes are used to make colourful stripes of different widths. Marble nail art is done to get the marble effect by adding nail paint in lukewarm water and inserting one’s nails into it.

Aftercare Tips
•  Avoid harsh soaps or too much exposure to water.
•  Wear rubber gloves while washing hands, it’s also advisable to wear protective gloves in cold weather or when doing household work.
•  Apply top coat (transparent nail polish) over the design every three-four days to make it stay longer. Thoroughly dry your hands after each wash and don’t forget to apply a good quality hand cream.
•  Do not use your fingernails as tools to do tedious jobs.
•  Use a nail strengthening cream regularly if you have weak nails.

The body’s building blocks...

Do you know how much protein you need and how important it is for you to get enough?
Live Mint : http://www.livemint.com/Leisure/xHijKvCFVW0gdYEB81RKjL/The-bodys-building-blocks.html
Sumaya Dalmia
For people interested in health, nutrition, and fitness, the word protein is probably constantly buzzing in their ears. You hear so much about protein—why it is important, how it builds muscle, that you should eat more of it, or get the newest miracle protein shake. So what really is protein and are you getting enough of it? How much do you really need? And is it only really available in meat?
There is little doubt about the importance of proteins—they are made of amino acids, which are the major structural component of every cell in the body. Not just the big muscles—every tissue, organ and part of the body is made up of proteins. These body proteins are constantly being damaged, broken down and then replaced by the protein we eat. There are 20 amino acids that form the basic building blocks of proteins in the human body. More than half of these the body can produce itself, and are called non-essential amino acids, since you don’t have to get them from your diet. Nine of the amino acids are “essential”, which means the body must absorb them from food. Here is where it gets interesting—not all dietary sources of protein contain all nine essential amino acids, and it’s the availability of these amino acids that determines the quality of the protein. So you have “complete” or “high-quality” proteins, which include proteins of animal origin like chicken, fish, meat, eggs, and dairy products; these contain all nine essential amino acids. And you have “incomplete” or “low” quality proteins, like legumes, cereals, vegetables, and nuts, which don’t have all the nine essential amino acids. The healthiest way to get protein in your body is to combine all the available sources to get a complete protein profile in your diet. For example, rice and dal in combination is much better than just rice or just dal. Rice, dal and some boiled eggs will give you an even better dose of protein.
How much do you need?
A nutritionally balanced diet should provide enough protein for most people.
If you have oats with milk and fruits and a couple of eggs for breakfast; around 100g of chicken with vegetables and rice for lunch; a handful of nuts in the evening; and rotidal and vegetables at night, you’ve got your protein requirement for the day. Healthy people rarely need protein supplements and most vegetarians are able to get enough essential amino acids by eating a variety of plant proteins.
The amount of recommended daily protein depends on your age, health and activity levels. The average protein requirement for a healthy adult is 0.8-1g per kilogram of body weight, according to the US Food and Drug Administration and Harvard School of Public Health, US. For someone into recreational exercises for fitness, the amount could vary from anywhere between 1.2g and 1.4g per kg of body weight.
When we workout, we break down muscle tissue and we need proteins for muscle repair and growth. If the protein intake is inadequate then the protein synthesis cannot keep up with the protein breakdown and body proteins (muscle tissue) are broken down and used to fulfil the body’s amino acid requirement, resulting in muscle loss and weakness.
So if you weigh 70kg and spend an hour in the gym four times a week, including weight training, you need 1.2gx70kg=84g of protein daily to make sure that you preserve, repair and rebuild muscle tissue. If you are a vegetarian, it might be a good idea to take an over-the-counter protein supplement like whey isolate to complete your required daily amount. Supplements like whey isolate, soy proteins, and egg powder are safe to consume if taken in the correct amount. This is where you calculate your protein requirements and roughly calculate how much you’re getting from food and supplement the rest with a protein supplement. Protein supplements can help promote immune function and weight management if used with a balanced, healthy diet which has complex carbs, fruits and vegetables.
The four main types of protein supplement are whey, casein, egg and soy. Whey protein is the most common protein supplement and is a “complete” protein, containing all the essential amino acids. Like whey, casein protein is also derived from milk. The nutritional value of casein is lesser than whey, and the body absorbs casein more slowly. Egg protein is essentially powdered egg whites. Soy protein is a non-dairy plant protein and is suitable for vegetarians or those with milk allergies.
Many people eat more protein than they need without causing much harm to the body, but there are some problems with it. First, if you are eating more protein than you need, you are also getting in more calories than you need, and that will lead to you putting on extra weight. And if your protein source is meat or dairy, this means you are also getting more saturated fat than is good for you since saturated fat increases LDL or “bad” cholesterol, which increases the risk of heart disease. It’s best to stick to beans, fish, chicken and nuts for your protein needs, instead of meats or dairy products high in saturated fat. Fish and nuts have the added advantage of being packed with heart-healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fats.
Pump up the protein
To include more lean protein in your daily diet, try these tips.
u Take yogurt with you to the gym and enjoy it as a post-workout booster.
u Include a whey isolate protein within 45 minutes after your workout.
u Make your breakfast oatmeal with milk instead of water.
u Snack on fat-free mozzarella cheese.
u Use a whole cup of milk for your cereal.
u Try smoked salmon or egg whites for breakfast.
u Take along a hard-boiled egg for an easy snack.
u Munch on edamame beans or a handful of nuts.
u Snack on sprouts of ‘mung’ (green gram) or ‘chana’ (chickpeas).

Now, blood group to dictate your diet..

Deccan Herald

We all know that a balanced intake is the key to a healthy and happy living. However, the food consumed has better impact if taken according to one’s blood type. The concept of diet plans based on blood type was evolved by American naturopath Dr D’Adamo.

According to his central hypothesis, a person will be best nourished by the diet that was predominant when his or her blood type emerged.

Dr Shweta Dewan, consultant nutritionist at Slimage Diet Clinic, says the different blood types – O, A, B and AB – are genetic variations that appeared at various points in human evolution.

“For instance, type O blood is thought to be the oldest surviving blood type, corresponding with the hunter-gatherer period. Type A blood appeared roughly 20,000 years ago, coinciding with the dawn of primitive agriculture and the introduction of things like legumes and cereal grains of the human diet. The other blood type emerged when humans were not only farming but also keeping livestock and consuming dairy products,” she says.

Going with the emergence of different blood types, people with type A blood will be healthier eating a more plant-based diet, while lots of meat suit those who have O blood group. Types B and AB are the lucky ones who can eat anything.

“As per this concept, people with A blood type should basically stick to a diet which is high on carbohydrates and low on fat such as fruits and vegetables as they have thicker blood than other blood types. Those who have B blood groups should consume a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, grains, fish, dairy, meat but avoid chicken.”

“People having O blood type should consume a mostly vegetarian diet and fish or meat only on rare occasions. They should completely avoid chicken. On the other hand, those with blood group AB should stick to a high protein diet rich in fruits and vegetables and red meat. They should limit the intake of wheat germ, whole wheat products, corns and avoid dairy products,” says the nutritionist.

Even as the concept is being tried and tested, it is considered more as based on science fiction than scientific facts. “As with any diet, it will get you thinking about what you are currently eating and making changes in your diet,” sums up Dr Shweta.

Keep it natural

Deccan Herald
Heavy make-up should be reserved for occasions only, say experts
Nothing beats natural beauty and often make-up adds to it. While heavy make-up suits special occasions like weddings and other formal night functions, it can look disastrous during daytime. Simplicity and minimalistic is the look to be donned for routine outings.
Though there can be any number of looks depending upon the occasion, there are a few basics that one can apply in routine times. Not only does a basic touch up give a natural look, but also saves on time that it might take to put on complete make-up.

Celebrity make-up artist Vidya Tikari says anything that is creamy and glossy should be avoided for no-occasion makeup. She says the makeup to be applied for for daily routine should be neither too heavy nor cream-based. “The mak-up has to be simple. Rather than compact, loose foundation should be applied if you are not going to any special function. It holds better than compact one,” advises Vidya.

Hair and make-up artist Aashmeen Munjaal differs a little with Vidya though. She says kajal, lip colour and non-transferrable foundation are basics that any woman can apply before stepping out of home. “Generally, women prefer compacts but non-transferable supple foundation has a cream base which is good for routine makeup. It gels with all kinds of skin and complexions. Matt foundation with little blush on in peach or pink colour also go well with the daily office look,” she explains.

When it comes to the eyes, kajal, mascara and eye-liner are quick to apply and they stick well for six-seven hours. Heavy eye-shadow and dramatic eye makeup should be kept for special occasions. “Of course one can go for different colours and hues of kajal and eye-liner but heavy eye makeup doesn’t give a good impression when one is going to the market or office,” says Aashmeen.

However, if one wants to go with eye-shadow everyday, a liquid one is advisable. “The eye-shadow should be liquid and mascara and eye-liner water-proof,” says Vidya.

There has to be a balance between eye and lip make-up. One of them should be toned down. Shehnaz, makeup artist at F1 Salon, says, “During daytime, if you are keeping the eye make-up dark, lip colour or lip gloss should be in a lighter shade and vice versa. Only one of them should be dark. One can go for firm golden eye shadow.”

Time for parents to get tips

Deccan Herald
Being a parent can be a joyful experience but it also is a tough job. No parent is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes. Even loving parents do things they don’t mean to do.

But if you think you’re having trouble as a parent and its is becoming increasingly difficult to rear your child correctly, get help. Parenting is one of the toughest jobs on earth as there is usually no prior training or qualification for the position. So, to save first-time parents from making serious mistakes, now there are online portals offering tips.

One such portal is Parentune.com, a pro-parent community that aims at bringing about a shift in parenting by creating an empowering system for each parent and child. It focuses on making parenting a pleasurable experience rather than a chore and helps reducing anxiety.

Founded by Nitin Pandey, it envisions empowering parents to do more for their child while helping improve the quality of development and progress. “An empowered pro-parent community is crucial in order to improve a child’s development. I want to empower each parent to achieve more for his or her child and moreover, this gives an opportunity to enable a positive shift and improve quality of lives too.”

Another portal which provides tips to parents or would-be parents is IndiaParenting.com by Nirali Sanghi. The site is a storehouse of information related to all aspects of parenting. It offers indepth information addressing issues ranging from conceiving a baby, singing rhymes, to solving problems related to a teenager. It also offers complete guidelines on raising children, making them aware of the rich cultural heritage and traditions of India. It also offers interactive tools such as due date calculator to choosing a lucky name for babies.

Kid&Parent.com and parentree.com are also portals which have specific tools and applications relevant and useful for parents and can be accessed as per requirement, time and schedules. These portals also reach out to a much larger cross-section of parents. Parents too can share their experiences online and provide helpful advice to others facing similar issues.

Clinical psychologist  Jeetendar Kaur feels these sites are a welcome trend and especially helpful for new-age parents. “It is very good option. At times you are not in a position to talk to someone about the problems because of a variety of reasons. At that time these portals come in handy. Also, one doesn’t have to give explanations as to why she/he is not able to handle a child.

“Earlier things were different with joint families and women staying at home but now the lady has to manage office, household chores, husbands and kids. So, a basic training is very much needed.”

So, for all you parents seeking help for better parenting these are new ways to get your questions answered!
