Five Things Successful CEOs Do Every Day

As an entrepreneur, I can tell you that every day there are trials, tribulations and just never quite enough work hours. Every single day is a battle, and wins come in large part because of very hard work. Succeeding takes non-stop devotion, dedication and attention. While strategy and planning is vital, the bottom line is success often comes from doing the basics.

Through the years, our team has learned five things which we have found successful CEOs do every single day:

1. Plan your day:

If you don't make a plan for your day, one of two things will happen. Either, nothing will happen at all, or you will waste time throughout the entire day. As I often tell colleagues at 5WPR, the only thing we have to sell is time. Without planning your day, you lose. That might sound harsh, but that's business. You need to stay on top of your schedule, and it starts with planning your day. I will never forget what one CEO told me -- I have a list of what's urgent on my desk at all times. Just because someone calls with something urgent for them doesn't mean it is urgent for me.

2. Have a vision:

Before you start a project, and as you transition from one to another, take a minute -- which isn't a large amount of time -- and pause. Then do nothing but think about the project; try to understand what you are trying to accomplish and map it out in your mind. Then, for a brief moment, just clear your head, and think about nothing. After that, let the plan fall back into place. Your intuition will help you see how to best tackle the task.

3. Set your day up to get the important stuff done first; and, get things done early.

As some studies have shown, successful people wake up early. The Marines are right, get as much as you can done before lunchtime. When it is quiet in the morning, you can think much clearer without phones ringing, distractions of the office or a flood of incoming emails.

4. Eat right:

Plan ahead, and make smart food choices. This doesn't mean just breakfast, but for each meal of the day. Food is energy for the body -- and eating right will make you more productive, more successful and feeling better.

5. Exercise:

Exercise brings energy and focus. Working out regularly allows people more confidence, more energy. And the biggest rule -- work hard. Work really, really hard, as there is no substitute for hard work.
